Balance Beams For Kids for Home

Does your child show interest or promise in gymnastics?

A balance beam for kids to practice at home provides a great launching point for kids to start developing their skills. A kid’s balance beam must be well constructed, not break the bank, and perhaps most important, it needs to be safe.

If you are handy you can start a toddler with this super cool DIY Balance Beam for Toddlers from Hands On We Grow. But there are quite a few affordable balance beams for homes on the market for gymnasts of all ages. Many are very portable, lightweight and easy to store.

Kids Balance Beams

Sunny & Fun Balance Beam Obstacle Course for Kids

Not just a toddler balance beam, the Sunny & Fun is great for little kids. Even though this is not a traditional athletic balance beam it makes for a fun way for the littlest all-stars to develop their balance and coordination.

The boards are interlocking so you can put them together in many ways to keep things interesting.

Once your toddlers grow a little older you can introduce them to a more standard balance beam.

Top Choice:
Springee 6ft. Balance Beam for Kids

The Springee Laiku 6ft Folding Gymnastics Beam stands out because of its extra firm core, making it extremely sturdy. It will hold up to 160 lbs and stand up over time, so your young gymnast can work with it for years as she grows.

The grabber dots on the underside work very well so you can be sure that this balance beam is as safe as it can be.

It’s 6 ft and folds in half for easy storage and transport.

Another reason to buy the Junior Gymnastics Balance Beam is that the manufacturer really stands behind it. The few Amazon reviews where there was a problem all attest to that, making this a risk-free purchase.

All these factors are why this is our selection for the best home balance beam for kids.

Give it a go, your young gymnasts will love it.

Tumbl Trak 4′ Sectional Kids Balance Beam

The Tumbl Trak Floor Balance Beam is great for kids’ gymnastics practice at home.  This beginner balance beam combines safety, durability, and affordability to make it the perfect entry option, and it is quite inexpensive.

It has a 4-inch width on top, just like the pros, but tapers to 8 inches on the bottom.  This incline mitigates those nasty spills, making it the perfect children’s balance beam.

The 4-foot length limits the number of steps possible but works best for a home in a confined playroom. For more flexibility, buy 2 and connect them with the velcro end to create an 8-foot practice beam.

The foam and suede material combine to make a lightweight home practice beam, firm but forgiving on the landing and corners.  One of the best features of this product is that it is very well-padded to mitigate the possibility of injury.

The only negative thing we can say about the Tumbl Trak 4-Foot Balance Beam is that the lightweight material and vinyl bottom can slip around.  A good tumbling or gymnastics mat placed underneath will solve this problem while providing an extra 2 inches of cushion on hard floors.

Z-Athletics Folding Low Beam (9’)

Usually starting at the age of 5 or 6 years old, young gymnasts have walked and played enough on the equipment to start trying out stunts.

A training beam for home allows for safer and less terrifying practice of those first few tricks.  This includes back walkovers, cartwheels, handstands as well as jumps, leaps, and turns.

The suede surfacing and high-density foam core delivers a real Olympic beam feel.  It has a slight taper for a more authentic feel than the above beginner balance beam.  The Z Athletics Folding Training Low Beam takes home gymnastics to the next level.

Milliard Adjustable Balance Beam for Home

From beginner to advanced – the Milliard Adjustable Balance Beam is adjustable so it will remain a valuable tool for your athlete to practice gymnastics at home throughout their entire career.

It has 2 modes: The low mode is 7″ off the floor, and the high mode is adjustable from 18″ to 24″. The high mode requires the installation of extension pillars. We found that to be easy.

The beam itself is made of sturdy wood, is a regulation 4″ wide,  and is covered with a high-quality suede, just like the beam your athlete will use for competition.

If have a young gymnast who is serious and plans to do gymnastics as they grow this is a no-brainer – a truly great product at a very reasonable price point.

Compared to the very popular 8′ Suede Balance Beam by the Beam Store, which is much more expensive.

Don’t Forget the Safety Mat

Kids are often energetic, fearless, and not the most coordinated.  This ensures that they will end up on the floor often, so your only option is cushioning the landing.  Amazon sells a number of cheap gymnastics mats that can do wonders for minimizing the impact of these falls. Take for example this Folding Exercise Aerobics Mat.

Mats like this are also useful for stretching and yoga.  The mat cushions with 2 inches of high-density foam, and folds out to an ample 4-foot by 10-foot rectangle.  The pleather material makes for a grippy surface that will not slide.

These gymnastics mats perfectly complement the 9-foot practice balance beam pictured above.  If your kids or grandkids have taken to tumbling or wrestling, quality tumbling mats will cushion the inevitable impacts for years to come.

Gymnastics Equipment for the Home

With all the great products available it’s easier than ever to get started with practicing gymnastics at home.  Kids can enjoy balance practice while having a ton of fun and imagining themselves at the Olympics.

We have found basic tumbling, floor exercises, and low balance beam to be the most feasible gymnastics exercises for home gyms, but any gymnastics still include the danger of injury.

Stilts and pogo sticks for kids are fun too but with a higher risk of falling.  Please research all safety recommendations and precautions before using any of these products, and always supervise or spot them when they are in use.
